Oh my, in 2 days time it will be 2014! A brand new year. And in just about 1 month’s time, it will be the Lunar New Year!

So I thought, its time to make a Horse Sushi Art Roll, since both the Chinese and Japanese zodiac for the new year is Horse!

I hope you like this sushi art roll bento creation. Packed in one of my favorite magewappa bento boxes from Bento&co, the Magewappa Classic.

The side dishes for the bento included: roast pumpkin, ketchup prawns, broccoli and lettuce. I also added a pretty sakura mochi.

明後日は2014年になります!新年ですよ。それに、約1ヶ月の時間では、旧正月になります!

New Year is also the best time to visit a Japanese fair or supermarket (if you have one where you live).

1 Jan is Japanese New Year and with all the celebrations, you can find really unique gifts, decorations and food items.

So I headed down to one of my favourite malls, Liang Court Shopping Mall!

True to its Japanese flavour, Liang Court Shopping Mall is celebrating Japan New Year by hosting cultural performances and activities from 26 Dec 2013 to 5 Jan 2014.
Shoppers can enjoy Sake opening, Shishimai (Japanese lion dance), Mochi pounding and even have your fortune read by Japanese boy band “Not for Sale”.

For me, the highlight was definitely the Japan Street Food fair at the mall’s atrium and also the New Year Goodies Fair by MEIDI-YA Supermarket!
There were super cute new year mochi (known as kagami-mochi 「お鏡餅」 in Japanese) by Taimasu brand! I love how it comes with a little horse figurine. You can also choose from mandarin orange or daruma figurines.

The mochi is very delicious when grilled, baked or even boiled. I will do a tutorial on this soon.

Last year, I bought their mochi with the snake figurine. This time, I got the white horse!
Even the kamaboko (Japanese fish cake) has horse print design!! Way too cute and cool! I even spotted a sakura tree print one.
Datemaki rolls, and other side sides eaten during the Japan New Year.
There were also the famous Osechi bento sets sold. Osechi is traditional Japanese New Year cuisine. Hopefully I can put together my own homemade Osechi bento tomorrow.
Festive Japanese alcohol! Kanpai~~~!!
And of course, bento boxes! Family size, 2 or 3-tiered boxes, perfect for New Year goodies!
So tempted, so tempted to buy this!! Sakura flowers~~~~ You can get a box of this and wait for it to blossom at home! How awesome!
Oh yes… and if you spend above $200* purchases, you can redeem a Furoshiki and New Year Goodies Box! Awesome-ness~
