Hello~Since I did not make any bento today, it is recipe sharing today!!
Since Easter holiday is coming in less than 1 month time, I wanted to share with you my Easter Egg and Bunny Recipe.
Thank you for the constant support and I hope you will like this step by step bento recipe to make cute easter eggs and bunny character.
NOTE
There are two parts to this recipe.
The first part covers the making of quail eggs, please note that for this recipe I use food coloring as I needed a variety of colors so it was easier to achieve the different tones. There are natural ways to color the egg, but it may be too much work if you needed several colors at the same session.
The second part is the creation of the bunny character. This would be great to be served at parties or packed into your bento.
Recipe – Easter Quail Eggs
Ingredients
- hard boiled quail eggs (I usually boil them for about 6-7mins)
- natural food coloring (I used red, blue, yellow and green here)
Tools
- jars/cups for the colored water
- spoon
- straw
- food tweezer
Method
1) Prepare in small jars/cups water and add natural food coloring. Note that the tint on the egg is usually lighter in shade, so you might need to go just one notch above your desired tone.
2) Boil your quail eggs and peel. Place the quail eggs in the jars.
Tip: Use a small spoon and scoop the egg up to check on the color. Do rotate the egg occassionally while it is soaking to ensure even color.
3) Remove once it has achieve the tone you desire.
4) Using a straw, make random punch outs. Gently remove the egg white area.
5) Swop the colors around and insert the small circular punch outs in the quail eggs. (It is random, you can match the colors as you like)
6) And now your are done!
Recipe – Bunny Character for Bento
Ingredients
- cooked short grain rice (Japanese rice)
- pink sushi mix available commercially
(alternatively, you can also use sakura denbu – but this can be a little sweet, OR other ingredients to color it like deco furikake, OR salmon falkes etc. Get creative!)
- seaweed sheet
Tools
- small scissors
- heat resistant cling wrap
- food tweezer
Method
1) Mix the cooked rice with pink sushi mix. Leave just about 2-3 spoonful of white rice.
2) Using a heat resistant cling wrap, shape the rice into a pink circular rice ball. Make sure it is tight such that it does not open up when remove from the cling wrap.
3) Repeat and this time make 2 smaller pink rice balls (this is for the bunny’s hands)
4) Repeat and shape a smaller and flatter white oval rice ball (this is for the bunny’s nose)
5) If you wish, you can make 2 ears. Over heat, I simply use some decorative paper and pasta sticks for the ears.
6) Cut 2 oval shape using seaweed and 1 smaller oval or round shape. This is for the features.
7) Assemble the parts together. Use a food tweezer to help you attach the seaweed parts to the rice ball.
8) And you are done!

Ooops hahhah I edited to make myself clearer. It is possible to be natural, but so much work especially if you are working small amounts and need several colors. Heheheh I used the gel/icing type of coloring, yes, Wilton!
