Korilakkuma Strawberry Bento コリラックマのイチゴキャラベン

I made a sweet strawberry theme bento today. Korilakkuma is enjoying strawberries. Spot the white strawberries!! Aren’t they the prettiest!

The side dishes were baked salmon and prawns, broccoli, sweet peas and edamame beans.

Such a big splurge on myself! Heheh I bought these shiro ichigo (white strawberries) air flown from Japan via Kuriya Fish Market at Rakuten SG.

Interestingly, these Japanese white strawberries are actually hybrids of strawberries and pineapples. Its full name in Japanese “初恋の香り, 白いちご” (hatsu koi no kaori, shiro ichigo), literally means “the fragrance of first love, white strawberry” in English.

They definitely are not cheap at all but I really wanted to try them so badly! Heh. Maybe I will make a shiro ichigo fruit tart too (if there are still enough strawberries left!).

These strawberries are also known as pineberries in some other countries.

In terms of taste, it is has the familiar strawberry flavour with a very subtle pineapple fragrance. It is also slightly softer in texture compared to the usual korean strawberries.

Honestly they are really pricey and the difference in taste is not very stark. But if you can splurge a little, and love novelty Japanese things, I say no harm! It is quite fun to taste them. It is still quite a novelty! Even some of my Japanese friends have not heard or seen white strawberries before this.
