Kakigori Shaved Ice Bento かき氷のキャラ弁

Shaved Iced Dessert Bento anyone? Heheh

After my earlier ice cream bento (post here), I thought – hey why not make a shaved ice bento too? :)

Such shaved ice desserts are enjoyed in many different countries. Have you eaten one before too? Chances are if you are a Singapore or living in Asia, then answer is likely a yes :D These shaved ice desserts vary from countries to countries, from the syrups, flavours, toppings and even the ice consistency!

Today’s my bento inspiration is based on the Japanese shaved ice desserts (known as Kakigori; かき氷). Popular during hot summer months, this Japanese shaved ice dessert has a fluffy ice consistency, flavoured with syrup and sometimes condensed milk, and occassional toppings of ice cream, dango, red beans etc.

In Singapore, Ice Kachang (or Ais Kachang) is the local shaved ice dessert popular with many. Singapore’s version is drizzled with variety of colored syrups, condensed milk and gula melaka (my fav!), often with toppings such as peanuts and red beans. And the bottom of the bowl is filled with ingredients such as jelly, more red bean and attap seeds.

Taiwan’s shaved ice desserts (known as Bao Bing; 刨冰) is of super fine ice consistency (sometimes flavored ice) with variety of toppings like yam balls or red beans.

Back to my bento! I hope you like this ‘icy cool’ Shaved Ice Bento for a hot weather lately. To match the summer look and feel, I made little sunflowers out of mini sausages and egg sheets for this bento.

The side dishes for today’s bento included sauteed french beans with broccoli, lettuce and sauteed tofu squares and mushrooms with yummy Lee Kum Kee XO Sauce.

Have a great week ahead. I have so much to share with you this with on my blog, stay tuned!
