I made Halloween Bento today – of Pumpkin Jack O Lantern and Skull bento characters.
The bento characters were made from quail eggs. As you might have realised, I enjoy using quail eggs in my bento making. It is very fun to use quail eggs as often the eggs can be easily dyed and shaped into the different characters you want for your bento.
This is my first time using quail eggs to make the Halloween Jack O Lantern bento character, I might do it again so I can make a tutorial for you :)
The bleeding skull bento character was inspired by a Halloween sandwich that a good friend of mine (also a bento blogger), Maki Ogawa san of cuteobento had made.
Beneath the bento characters are squid ink somen noodles which I recently found and bought here at the Japanese supermarket. I also added some vegetables including lettuce, broccoli and carrots, plus a cute halloween character pasta – the bat.
To enjoy this bento, I packed a small bottle of somen dipping sauce which I can eat with the noodles. You can get these convenient sauce containers from Japanese 2 dollars (100yen) stores both here in Singapore and in Japan. I also added some Halloween bento picks which I bought online.
The ingredients for the characters included:
Jack O Lantern bento character
- quail egg
- food coloring
- deep fried pasta stick
Bleeding Skull bento character
- quail egg
- seaweed
- ketchup / tomato sauce
