Kitty Udon Bento~~ MEOW!

Today’s bento will be adored by cat lovers~ are you one? I needed a breakfast bento so I decided to cook fried udon. For the cat-theme, I made two little kitties from quail eggs.

A yummy and kawaii bento!

The feature (dark parts) for the kitty cats in the bento was made from seaweed. To have some colour, I added some pink egg sheet for the inner ears. The little bits of pink immediately brighten the bento design and also added a certain cute factor.

I used about 4 hard boiled quail eggs for this bento.

Today’s bento was packed in my round enamelware bento box by Japanese maker Noda Horo. I love the little ceramic kitty piece that I used as chopstick rest too, it matched my kitty bento theme perfectly ;)

The cute strawberry pocky-design chopsticks, called Pocky Hashi is from Bento&co.

The fried udon was yummy, here is the recipe!

Ingredients:

  • french beans, cut into 1.5cm pieces
  • sweet peas, cut into 1cm pieces
  • carrot, cut into strips
  • golden mushroom or other type of mushroom you like
  • udon noodles 1 packet
  • Seasoning: (0.5 tsp dark soy sauce, 1 tsp Lee Kum Kee XO sauce, 1tsp vegetarian oyster sauce)
  • sesame oil
  • minced garlic 0.5tsp

Method:

1. Heat sesame oil in a pan. Throw in the carrots followed by the garlic and sauté for about 20 seconds.

2. Add in the vegetables (omit golden mushroom) and continue to stir fry until the vegetables are 70-80% cooked. Remove from pan.

3. Add in udon noodles into the pan and about 1 tbsp water. Add in the seasoning and continue to stir fry for about 1 min. If it gets to dry, just add a little water at a time.

4. Add in the vegetables from Step 2 back into the pan, and the golden mushrooms. Stir fry until the vegetables and mushroom is cooked.

5. Remove from heat and pack into your bento.
