Today is Winter Solstice~ Also known as Dongzhi (冬至). A festival that celebrates family reunion on the day with the longest night and shortest daylight.
Winter Solstice got me thinking that I need to make a ‘icy cold’ bento, and polar bears came to mind.
So for a nice wintery theme bento, I made this Polar Bear Bento. And it is not just any polar bear but a big polar bear paired with a baby polar bear to symbolise the sweet reunion of families :)
To further enhance the whole polar bear and winter theme, I even created ice and snowflakes in the bento. Yes, all of which are edible!
The ice/sea ice/ice bergs are actually a type of mochi, which is used in traditional japanese sweets.
The snowflakes are egg sheet (using egg white only), similar to what I used to make the polar bears. I used my fondant snowflake cutter for this.
As briefly mentioned, the polar bears were made using thin egg sheet (using egg whites only) and the features were cut from seaweed.
The design and layering of the egg sheet then creates the polar bear characters. These two techniques are mentioned in my Kawaii Bento book - Making Egg Sheets of Different Colour (pages 26 & 27) and Tracing and Cutting Characters (page 29).
The side dishes for this Winter Solstice Polar Bear Bento included brocooli, lettuce and sauteed prawns. Beneath the polar bears is curry fried rice with mushrooms and vegetables.
Have a wonderful reunion with your family tonight and enjoy eating some tang yuan dumplings! Need a recipe? Check out my latest Totoro Tang Yuan Recipe here.
Today’s bento was packed in my white monbento from Bento & co.
