Asanoya Bakery, a 82 year old bakery from Japan has opened a bakery cafe here in Singapore. I was so super excited to try out this Japanese bakery the moment I heard about this place.
Interestingly, I never quite learnt about when while vacationing in Japan, but this famed bakery from Karuizawa is supposed to be pretty popular back in Japan.
Being a huge fan for Japanese bread and anything Japanese, I was happy to try out their breads in a lovely gathering with my blogger friends.
Nope, this was not a media tasting session, just a cosy group of foodies gathering to try out the breads from Asanoya Bakery.
Located within walking distance from either Bras Basah MRT station, or Bugis MRT station, boulangerie Asanoya is not difficult to locate.
Just walk down along Queen street and you will see this huge spacious bakery located at the first floor of Wilby Centre. Pretty hard to miss.
There are parking spaces here at the building, but limited lots, so car drivers please take note.
Decked out in modern clean furniture. This bakery cafe is spacious and lovely for a nice meet up with friends. I also saw some family groups too.
Amazingly how much bread we ate that day! haha. And this was just round 1. :P
Interestingly, the sweet offerings were quite average in taste. They excelled more in their savoury breads instead.
Being a sweet tooth, I was rather disappointed at most of the sweet breads, but totally fallen in love with their French Potato, Curry Donut, Maple Walnut and Karuizawa Green Tea Bread.
Highly recommend to go for their savoury bread items :)
They also toast the breads for you if you are dining in, please do request for that as the bread taste great warm!
French Potato $3.20
I was pretty blown away by the French Potato. Fresh crusty with a whole baked potato enveloped within topped with that lovely mayonnaise cream on top. Every bit of the carbs was worthwhile for the space in my tummy!
Best eaten lightly toasted.
There is good reason why this is one of the hot favourites in the store. Using potatoes all the way from Japan to make their lovely curry filling, this donut was fried to perfection without that stale oily aftertaste. Love the crisp texture on the exterior of the donut, yet the softness of the donut bread within paired with the curry filling.
Harvest Bun $4.50
Again a crusty bread~ this time filled generously with sweet potatoes and chestnut. Reminds me of fall season.
Crossiant – Apple Almond $3.90
A crossiant topped with almonds and dusted with powdered sugar. A sweet apple paste filling inside the crossiant awaits your bite.
Not the best quiche I have eaten but it is not too bad. Though it was rather small for a $6 tag, but they made that up with the generous mushroom fillings.
Danish Sweet Potato Yuzu $3.60
Danish pastry was not impressive and felt dry and rather hard, instead of being buttery and flaky. Generous chunk of sweet potato on top of Yuzu custard cream and some almond slices toppings.
Again, another sweet item that failed to impressed. The danish pastry was too dry and hard and lack the fragrance of butter nor the flaky layers. I say better go for other bread items.
Tomato Cheese Donut $2.60 and Broiche (Plain) $2.60
The tomato cheese donut was average though it felt rather too oily. I did quite enjoy the broiche bread, it was soft and buttery – just the way I like it.
Green Tea Choc Cube $4.50
Being matcha lovers, we were rather disappointed at the weak matcha flavour and the custard/kaya like texture of the filling. We had wished for more ‘flow’. Where is the chocolate? The chocolate is referring to the bread, the bread cube is made of chocolate bread dough.
Overall I will come back here again.
While there are hits and misses, there are quite a number items that I enjoyed very much and I love the relaxing set up of the store.
