Ah… doesn’t it look like a sweet romance between Sun & Moon in this carrot cake bento? heheheh
And yes, you heard correctly – carrot cake. This is not the western carrot cake but the asian/chinese fried radish cake or known as fried carrot cake (蘿蔔糕) or closely to out hearts as ‘Chai Tow Kuay’ to us here in this region. In fact, the cafe type of sweet carrot cakes were a new thing that came along with the imported western food culture.
I received super yummy steamed radish cake from Li Bai Cantonese Restaurant given to me by Sihan @fundamentally_flawed. Decided to stir fry the radish cake and eat them for breakfast today.
Since I could not decide whether to have white or black fried carrot cake, I decided to make them both. And the idea of the Sun and Moon then came about~~ Mr Sunny for the white carrot cake and Ms Moon for the black carrot cake. Quite romantic ~~ haha
I made Mr Sun from a sunny side up, I added the ‘sun rays’ using thin egg sheet. The features were made from seaweed. Wishing I have more time, as I would have added little cheeks to Mr Sun.
On the other hand, Ms Moon was made from hanpen (Japanese fish cake), to make the moon more realistic, I dab a little dark soy sauce to create the shading on the moon.
Happy that I could use my weather theme baran sheets too! I used the rainbow and cloud designs. Added little clouds made of egg on both ends of the rainbow, and little stars cut from carrots.
Baran sheets are food divider decorative sheets, they come in a variety of designs and can be used in bento.
