Tsum Tsum Sushi Rolls! 1041250A-50CB-495F-92CC-948EC6414141One of my new year resolutions is to give my  blog greater attention and more love. After my leg injury last year, it has been rather difficult getting back my mojo to blog regularly – an affair that I used to do almost daily.

So starting today, I will be sharing many of the postings that I have made but had not the chance to post them here. I have been posting much more regularly on my Instagram than my blog over the past one year :P.

Many of you would know that I enjoy making decorative sushi rolls, also known as kazarimaki sushi. My second cookbook ‘ Kawaii Deco Sushi’ was dedicated solely to recipes for decorative sushi rolls.

I also like to create Disney characters in my sushi rolls. Especially Tsum Tsum characters.

Being cute and roundish in shape – making them easier to be replicated in sushi rolls.

To start the week, let us enjoy some lovely Disney Tsum Tsum Sushi. I cannot decide which ones I like better, so here a compilation of some of the Tsum Tsum sushi I made.

Frozen series~~~ Elsa the Snow Queen, Anna and of course, the adorable Olaf.

We have good old Winnie the Pooh and friends!

Here is Mickey and Minnie together with Donald and Daffy.

And not forgetting the Disney princesses – Tinkerbell, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Ever since I started my journey in bento making, I remained very thankful to the various opportunities I have received.

So imagine my excitement when I was invited to Tokyo to teach a kazarimaki sushi  workshop. Thank you Japan Awaits for hosting me.

I hope I will have the chance to teach in Tokyo again soon.

Here are some photos from the workshop from one of the sessions. It was so much fun teaching everyone – thank you so much for coming.

PomPomPurin Sushi (5) Pom Pom Purin Sushi

Sharing another creation that I made over the weekend. Same reason why I made Winnie the Pooh. I had so much leftover rice from teaching bento workshop so had to find a way to use the rice.

Deco sushi was one good way. Yummy to eat and cute.

Since the rice I had was yellow (was teaching minions bento workshop), so I decided to could make PomPomPurin Sushi!

Deco sushi or known as kazarimakisushi in Japanese is something that I picked up since end 2012. Subsequently after my instructor certification examination in Japan, I continued to make more deco sushi and kawaii sushi designs, and coming up with my own original designs.

This PomPomPurin is definitely an original design based on the popular Sanrio character. PomPomPurin Sushi (2)

If you are living outside Japan, this might not be very familiar to you. But PomPomPurin actually won the most popular character in the recent voting conducted by Sanrio for their magazine Strawberry News.

Making deco sushi is definitely very fun and the techniques can be picked up through my recently launched cookbook ‘Kawaii Deco Sushi‘.

Once you master the basic recipes and techniques, there are just so many ways and possibilities you can make Deco Sushi!

PomPomPurin Sushi (4)The dark brown portions are actually kanpyo, which are seasoned gourd strips. Used that to make the eyes, nose and PomPomPurin’s signature beret.

For kanpyo i like the ones sold at Cold Storage Japanese section. They are value of money and the kanpyo strips are longer and darker in tone. Better for sushi making.

To colour the rice yellow, you can mix in egg yolk, or yellow furikake too.

PomPomPurin Sushi (1)Paired the PomPomPurin sushi with some baked salmon fillet and a side salad.

So easy and yummy!

Minions Deco Sushi (3)Minions Deco Sushi!

Stuart! Why are you in my lunch box? hahahahh

I even placed my guitar chopstick rest in the bento box, to match the theme. Everyone remembers Stuart and his guitar (just like Bob and his teddy Tim).

Minions Deco Sushi has been on my to-do list for the longest time. So glad I did it!

Minions fever over yet? I certainly hope not~ And hope you have fun checking out this cute Minions Deco Sushi creation.

It has been about 2 years since my certification with the Tokyo Sushi Academy for their Japan Sushi Instructor Association.

Since then, it has been a fulfilling journey, from learning how to make deco sushi rolls (known as kazarimakisushi in Japanese) to taking the instructor exams, creating my own original recipes like this one, and writing my own deco sushi cookbook (titled Kawaii Deco Sushi) that was published just less than 2 months back.

Thank you for the support always :)

For this Minions Deco Sushi, lets take a look at the sushi roll before cutting it up!

Divided the sushi roll into four equal pieces.

What is missing are the eyes and mouth which I added using some seaweed cut freehand.

Packed two of them into my bento box with some vegetables and pan seared salmon fillet.

While these two were passed to a friend of mine who is a Minion fanatic. haha. I hope she likes them.

If you are also keen on making deco sushi, remember to check out my cookbook okie!

Promise you that this cookbook covers all the basic techniques with visual illustrations for each of the recipe steps! It will be fun!

Now its time to eat Stuart :P haha

Chicken Hen Deco Sushi Bento (2)Hen Deco Sushi Bento.

Featuring a creation from my latest cookbook – Kawaii Deco Sushi, officially launched just about one month ago.

Yes! It is possible to make cute sushi creations too.

Deco sushi, or better known as kazarimakisushi in Japanese is great for bento, parties and even picnics.

Don’t worry if you are a beginner too. I have included good solid chapters of sushi techniques and basics in the book, followed by fully illustrated recipes for you to follow.

The recipes also have difficulty level indicator to guide you along ;)

I also have a chick deco sushi recipe in the same book, you can even make both and pair them together! haha. For today’s bento, playing along with the chicken / hen theme, I chose to cook a lovely sunny side up, and also packed some buffalo chicken drumlet in the bento.

The other side dishes included unagi (Japanese grilled eel), lettuce and some blanched broccoli.

Here is a glimpse of my cookbook and the recipe.

Do read more about my Kawaii Deco Sushi book and where you are find it / buy it here.

Bunny Deco Sushi (2)I am so excited to share more about the launch of my upcoming new cookbook  titled ‘Kawaii Deco Sushi‘.

Yes, this book is all about cute decorative sushi.

And each recipe is fully illustrated!

I was doing a promo video over the weekend in preparation of the launch so I made this bunny deco sushi for the video.

Hop hop hop~~ this bunny deco sushi is not only cute but also very yummy!

kawaii deco sushi cover

This time round, I came up with original designs of 29 deco sushi recipes, under various themes including: Garden, Autumn, Animal, Food, Transport and Romance.

Learn and make deco sushi from flowers, to cute animals, a police car and even a watermelon!

Prepare these deco sushi to brighten any table, bento box or picnic basket, and rope in children and guests to join in the fun!

‘Kawaii Deco Sushi is already in stores now at major bookstores and online stores are taking pre-orders. Please see more details here.

If you are coming over to Singapore or residing here, please join  me at my Official book launch which will be on 11 July 2015 (Saturday) 4pm at Kinokuniya Takashimaya store.

I would love to meet you and of course be happy to autograph the cookbook!

Kawaii Deco Sushi Poster

This Bunny Sushi recipe is included in Kawaii Deco Sushi cookbook under Animal theme section.

This time, instead of pink fish floss, I used salmon flakes to colour the rice, hence a slight orangey pink colour.

The recipes are very versatile, like this example, you can choose to change the colours slightly according to your own preference. There is a very useful colour chart in the cookbook that guides you on how to use various food ingredients to colour the rice into different hues.

I am so excited to show you the final edited video!

Stay tuned for more updates~~

And please continue to support me and my books!

Totoro Sushi (1)Totoro Sushi!

I remember first making Totoro deco sushi (kazarimaki sushi) sometime ago in 2013. The design and arrangement/use of ingredients were slightly different from what I made today.

This time round, I was able shape and design the whole deco sushi to include Totoro’s eyes and ears in the roll too.

Was really fun to make the Totoro sushi.

The grey portion of the sushi rice was made by mixing sushi rice with ground black sesame.

The whites of the eyes are actually 2 cheese sausages that I added into the sushi roll.

And the other details of Totoro like the eyes, whiskers and lines were cut from seaweed.

A simple meal of Totoro deco sushi and miso baked salmon fillet.

Healthy and very delicous~ miso and salmon goes well together.

Drink a cup of hot tea as you enjoy this sushi will be so awesome too~

While this Totoro Sushi is not in my upcoming new cookbook, there will be some 30 other deco sushi recipes, Stay tuned to more updates on my blog and social media.

And a glimpse of my new cookbook here.

IMG_0092Mount Fuji sushi ~ or also known as more endearing name Fuji san kazarimaki rolls.

Mount Fuji / Fuji san (富士山)is Japan’s highest mountain at some 3776metres tall. An active volcano, Mount Fuji is regarded as one of the key symbols of Japan, often depicted in art and products and remains as a popular tourist spot.

I had much fun making this Fuji san deco sushi roll!IMG_0095

It has been about half a month since I made new deco sushi rolls, ever since I posted the updates on my Instagram on my second cookbook photo shoot.

Yes! I will be publishing my second cookbook mid of this year and this time it will be on kazarimaki sushi which is deco sushi rolls.

More about that will be updated!

I actually made this yesterday but was for meetings so only managed to write the blog post today.

Using blue pea flowers extra with a little blue gel food coloring, I was able to cook the rice into a nice blue hue. I prepared this first for Stitch bento and refrigerated the leftover rice.

Fuji-san came to my mind when I was thinking what I could make with the blue color rice. IMG_0093

I wanted to depict the sunset at Mount Fuji for this kazarimaki sushi roll.

So I used both orange sushi rice (sushi rice with some salmon soft furikake) and yellow sushi rice (rice with some yellow deco furikake) to form the skyline.

The orange sun is actually Japanese pickled burdock called Yamagobo. It is commonly used in futomaki sushi. IMG_0094Details on the tableware

  • Japanese plate from Crate&Barrel (I visited the Ion branch)
  • Chopsticks and small dish from Style Store Japan.
  • Black serving plate and Chawan from Daiso
  • Mount Fuji chopstick rest was bought in Japan (I can’t remember the store)

Have a wonderful day~

I saved these Bunny sushi art rolls from the shoot then ended on Thursday and styled it for photography to share here.

Perfect for Easter too right? For those who celebrate Easter, I wish you a happy Easter day!

My upcoming second cookbook contains original recipes to make a variety of sushi art rolls. Plus this round, there will be step by step recipe photos for every design! (Nearly ‘killed’ the photographer) but I am sure all my book readers will love the clear visual instructions!

rice tableware (1)

Since it is a Bunny and Easter theme today, I definitely had to use the RICE carrot plate I got from Motherswork. So cute right?!

And super match the bunny theme today.

Motherswork retails quite a wide collection of RICE tableware and stock new items regularly too. RICE is a children friendly melamine tableware range with really attractive and cheerful designs and colours.

Check out Motherswork’s stores for the awesome RICE tableware goods and lifestyle products too :)Four outlets in Singapore, at Great World City, Tanglin Mall, Marina Bay Sands and 112 Katong.

IMG_6979And for more carrots~I made a mini carrot garden using minced meat, baby carrots and lettuce.

The little garden pot was bought from Character and Design store located at Plaza Singapura level 3.

Little Birds Kazarimaki sushi bento!

Chirp~Chirp~ I think these little birds are quite cute :) do you like them?

I always enjoy making kazarimaki sushi, which is also known as decorative sushi rolls, or sushi art rolls.

Since being certified as an instructor with the Japan Sushi Instructor Association in 2013, I have been incorporating kazarimaki sushi in my bento, and often making my own recipe designs.

Since today is a Monday, I thought these little birds will be a nice cheery start for the week.

Although the real reason for making this is recipe testing for my second cookbook.

Yes you heard that right! I will be writing a second cookbook of the Kawaii Series. And this time, this cookbook will be on cute decorative sushi art rolls~!!

The same reason why I have been relatively quiet on my social media for the past 2 weeks.

Although I have been blogging, even my blogger friends have noticed much less chatter from me online. Haha

The truth is that I have been busy preparing the recipes and manuscript.

I am really excited about this second cookbook to share with you my Kawaii Sushi Art Rolls recipes!

Very soon, you will also be able to make your own sushi rolls as my new cookbook will feature step by step photo guide for every single recipe :) Stay tuned for the book launch in second half of this year!

A quick glance of some of my past kazarimaki sushi creations:

Today’s Little Bird’s Kazarimaki sushi was made mainly from egg soboro, sushi rice, seaweed and carrot.

The side dishes were sauteed prawns, french beans with mushroom and carrots.

Plus today’s sushi art roll creation is also in line with #creativesghomecooks theme for March month. My second contribution for this online movement.

Read more about this online movement on The Silver Chef’s blog.

Chick Sushi Art Roll Bento

Isn’t it cute how the chick is popping out from the egg shell in this sushi art roll design?

It has been sometime since I made sushi art rolls (also known as kazarimaki-sushi in Japanese). I love making sushi art rolls as they are always a surprise and challenge, plus it gives me great satisfaction when the design comes out well.

Inspired by another Chick Sushi Art Roll recipe in a book, I tweaked the design slightly to make my own version.

Making this Chick Sushi Art Roll was surprising very quick, it took me only 30mins including preparing the ingredients.

Which is great so I did not need to rush and could have time to pack the side dishes for the bento too!

This Chick Sushi Art roll is really yummy, since I coloured the rice using scrambled eggs fry in butter (yummy!) and the egg shell border is made of aburaage (fried tofu pocket).

The mouth portion was made from carrot which I cut and trim into oval shape. And the eyes were made from kanpyo strips which I rolled tightly into two small rolls.

The side dishes for today’s bento included Buffalo chicken drumlets, sauteed broccoli with bacon bits, strawberry and lettuce.

I also used Chick design bento picks to skewer the edamame beans.

I packed the Chick Sushi Art Roll bento into my bean shape – Mame Magewappa Bento box from Zairyo SG.

Zairyo SG is an online  store that offers a wide selection of freshly-imported Japanese food products and tableware.
