IMG_5510Flock has continued to impress me in my return visits to this cafe with their consistent food quality and service standards.

With is first outlet in Tiong Bahru, they have opened a second cafe outlet at Ghim Moh serving up the same quality cafe food.

One of their must-order all time favourites include the Cheeky Eggs, which consists of thick slice of brioche bread topped with braised pork jowl, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce.

The pork jowl was well braised, soft yet meaty in the mouth.

Its savoury flavour and bite is a perfect marriage with the richness from the egg yolks and hollandaise sauce.

No wonder this continues to be hot favourite (and mine too) amongst their customers.

And lucky for me, I was with a group of bloggers friends for this makan session at Flock and we got to try more than just their Cheeky Eggs. The perks of dining in a group – EAT MORE! haha

Another high recommended dish at Flock Cafe will be their Pulled Pork Pasta and their Dried Shrimp and Prawns Pasta.

Flock Cafe nailed the Asian element in their pasta dishes perfectly.

The Pulled Pork Pasta was bursting with flavours of the braised pork jowl (the same one served in Cheeky Eggs).

So this is a good option, if you are more a pasta than bread person.

The choice of tortiglioni was also excellent, as the pasta provided the starchy sturdy bite that paired well with the soft pork meat and full-bodied gravy.

Need a little more kick with that local taste? Then think no further and order their Dried Shrimp and Prawns Pasta.

Seared prawns tossed in linguine pasta with garlic and Hebi (Dried shrimps), this dish was bursting with flavour and yet does not feel too rich for the stomach. In fact, I find this pasta addictively delicious!

For those who are not so so keen on poached eggs or eggs benedict, why not try their burger and sandwich options, including the Chicken Burger and homemade Otah Ciabatta Sandwich.

The Chicken Burger includes a meaty patty of deep fried chicken meat, and vegetables between the burger bun slices.

I wouldn’t say this is the best burger dish, so go for it if you are really craving for burger.

In comparision, the Otah Ciabatta was a more interesting dish for me.

Their homemade Otah patty was packed with spices and fish meat and actually feels quite healthy with the generous cabbage and ciabatta served alongside.

Now that we have enjoyed the savory items, it is time to slowly ease into the sweet flavours.

Bacon? (check) French Toast? (check) Maple Syrup? (check)!!

The result is a wonderful combination of thick brioche french toast with fried bacon and generous amount of maple syrup.

Still have some room to spare? Flock Cafe also have desserts including cakes and tarts.

We tried their Lemon Tart and Cheesecake. The Lemon Tart was refreshing and light, though the tart shell would be better if more crisp.

The other worth mentioning about Flock Cafe is that there are non-coffee options (perfect for tea lovers like me) including their Genmaicha Latte and Hot Chocolate.

Genmaicha Latte though a little sweet was packed with roasted rice tea and green tea flavours. Best enjoyed hot/warm!

d’Good Cafe

Nestled in the prime location of Holland Village, d’Good Cafe has been around for some 2 years, but continues to serve their regulars and attract new customers.

Why? I think it is because d’Good Cafe is able to serve good consistent cafe food and coffee at their cafe.

The passion of the owners also shines through, from the execution of their menu to the little details in their cafe set up.

The moment we stepped into the cafe, the decor already spoke volumes of the passionate folks behind the cafe.

Spanning a total of 2 floor space and an alfresco dining area, d’Good Cafe has a cosy country style decor with many homely touches and great natural lighting.

The special swing area while not the most conducive space for eating main courses, is a perfect spot for some drinks and chill out. Plus photo taking too.

Coffee Lovers behold! d’Good Cafe offers a special coffee blend customised to your taste. A short coffee appreciation and some filling up of forms, their barista will lead you through a short tasting and appreciation session to customise a coffee blend suited to your tastebuds.

You can then ‘saved’ this blend for your future visits.

How totally awesome is that?

Non coffee drinkers also have options such as Matcha Latte (cute latte art!)

While the menu at d’Good Cafe is what we would call standard cafe items, it definitely has a much more extensive list than most and more importantly is in the excellent execution of their food.

This was also one of the few tasting sessions that all the menu items served to us were satisfyingly delicious.

Starting with the Prawn linguini. Perfectly al dente spaghetti pasta tossed in olive oil, garlic, chilli and a generous serving of pan seared prawns.

So delicious~

The second pasta dish impressed us further. It was their Clams Vongole.

Few is able to nail this dish well and d’Good Cafe did just that with this classic Italian pasta dish of perfectly steamed clams and al dente pasta cooked in white wine.

This is definitely my top pasta choice here.

Prefer a healthy option but yet love eggs benedicts?

You would totally dig their Portobello Mushroom Eggs Benedict of well poached eggs on two large portobello mushrooms topped with hollandaise sauce.

The mushrooms gave a earthy ‘meaty’ taste and texture to this dish, so satisfying that I did not even missed not having my usual brioche/bread.

Meat lovers will find joy in their Chicken Skewers.

I was rather shocked at how generous the portion was. Just check out the large meaty chicken meat on sticks.

Even with this large meat chunks, d’Good Cafe baked the chicken meat with perfect timing, retaining its flavourful meat juices, moist on the inside and nicely charred on the outsides.

Another delightful chicken dish was the Baked Lemongrass Chicken served with mashed potato and some sautéed zucchinis and mushrooms.

Remember to save some room for desserts!

Their in-house baked cheesecakes are one of the best. Came highly recommended is their Maple Sea Salt Cheesecake.

Chocolate lovers can opt for their Triplet Cheesecake which consists of cheesecake, chocolate mousse and an oreo base, topped with a chocolate macaron.

Its rather rich for me to finish one slice on my own but chocoholics will definitely satisfy their cravings with this.

Being a waffle lover, I was rather excited to try their Purple Sweet Potato Waffles. A surprising unique texture of crisp exteriors and a soft cake like texture on the inside, quite a delightful sweet treat. Best enjoyed hot.

The use of sweet potatoes also meant that this dessert item could be quite filling, so do share the calories with someone! :D

The Holqa Cafe is definitely a upcoming gem in the East. Helmed by a group of passionate young cafe owners, Holqa dishes up really impressive chicken wings and decent cafe food.

The Asian Pulled Pork with 3 Cheese Sandwich $15.90 was a winning dish. Imagine fluffy, egg, thick slices of broiche bread topped with generous pulled pork and cheese~ oh my!

All cafe food should taste like this!

I never say this about fried food usually, but these chicken wings were totally addictive and a must order!

The Sns-Ji $9.90, chicken mid joints coated with Holqa’s own secret homemade sweet and spicy sauce are inspired by the popular fried Korean chicken dish. The sweet and sour sauce gooey coating was a little sticky, it brought back certain nostalgia but I could not pinpoint exactly what it was until the owners shared that as they were working on this chicken wing recipe, the sauce reminded them of the tapioca chips that many snacked on as kids!

I always love a good Asian rendition of a western dish.

If you are like me too, do try their Braised Asian Pulled Pork Aglio Olio $14.90, spaghetti dressed with garlic and olive oil and stir fried with braised pork jowl and asian spices.

Can’t decide between savoury or sweet? Then perhaps the Savoury Cream Cheese French Toast & Smoked Salmon $15.90 could be the thing for you.

I did however find the choice of salmon in this dish a little odd, but that fluffy thick broiche bread for the cream cheese french toast was absolutely heavenly.

Me, with my sweet tooth might be off better with their Broiche French Toast with Fresh Fruits instead.

Pom Pom Purin Cafe TokyoYes, I was one of the crazy ones who braved the crowds to visit Pom Pom Purin Cafe in Harajuku, Tokyo.

Pom Pom Purin, the yellow golden retriever dog character introduced by Sanrio in 1996 while might not be as famous as its counterparts like Hello Kitty and Melody overseas, Pom Pom Purin still has a pretty strong following back home in Japan.

Many of you might be wondering how was this cafe and the food?

IMG_2483

I heard of the snaking queues for the cafe but what awaited me was quite beyond my imagination.

First attempt, at 530pm on a Sunday night (the cafe closes at 9pm) – upon reaching I was asked if I was a coupon holder (I was not), then was promptly informed that all advanced coupons are been given out so the cafe is technically not open to any walk-ins, only those who had came earlier to get the coupons. Upon enquiry, they informed that the cafe starts giving out coupons at around 930am (cafe only opens at 11am) while it lasts.

So the first attempt was a failure. I totally underestimated the popularity of the Pom Pom Purin Cafe.

IMG_2444

Towards the tail end of my vacation, I finally had a more relaxed day and decided to pop by in the morning to get my hands on the advance ticket coupon. I received ticket queue #323 at 1030am and was asked to return only after 1pm.

I eventually did return to the Pom Pom Purin Cafe at 240pm,but had to wait in the queue for one hour before getting a seat!

The cute entrance and exterior of the Pompompurin Cafe.

Upon entering, you will be greeted by a cute Pompompurin character and its friends at the centre of the store. The whole cafe is dressed up in the theme color of Pompompurin – yellow, brown and white.
DSC08265

DSC08264 DSC08260 DSC08261

Super cute menu awaits at this cafe, from Pompompurin curry rice, to pasta sets and cute desserts including pancakes, parfait and of course pudding. All the food menu will feature Pompompurin character either in the food ingredients or in the cutlery, e.g. the limited edition Pompompurin mug – which you can bring home after the meal too!

DSC08353

Even the wall decorations were so cute!

DSC08296

The table set up is simple but still in line with the theme, a cute Pompompurin table mat and even the tissues were in Pompompurin design. I took a set home :D

IMG_2570

After your food, some retail therapy? A small corner that sells Pompompurin goods, including some limited edition items only available at the cafe.

DSC08300

The food?

It was really fun to order them and they were pretty cute. But taste wise, they are not worth the one hour wait. They did not taste bad but was really very average.

I guess it is more about the kawaii experience than the food.

For my main course, I ordered the Pompompurin Coconut Milk Chicken Curry (900yen excluding taxes). The rice infused with some mild curry spice was shaped in Pompompurin character. The curry had a strong coconut taste and some chicken pieces and some peppers cut in cute shapes. ,

IMG_2531

For desserts, I ordered the Pancake Tower (1,490yen excluding taxes) and Purin Pompompurin (500 yen excluding taxes).

DSC08307

IMG_2540

The panckes were sadly quite dry and thin. The different layers are sandwiched with whipped, maple syrup, jam and chocolate sauce. The jam was so overpowering that I could not actually taste much of anything else.

The only plus point was that menu that comes with this Pompompurin mug allows the customers to bring home a mug. Don’t worry, no need to wash. They will give you a brand new one in a box.

The pudding was better. Do however go easy on the caramel sauce, I poured too much and it was a little too bitter. haha. *by the way, you do not get to keep this pudding mug so please don’t nick it.

IMG_2543 IMG_2546 DSC08334

You do get to keep this cup, but only when you order food items that featured this limited edition mug ;)DSC08345

Would I go back again and wait another hour? – No.

I will go try the other character cafes.

But it is a nice one time experience which I did not regret. Yes, it is all about enjoying the kawaii experience and not so much about the food really.

Ever since I saw these super kawaii 3D latte art served at Brew Maison, I have been wanted so much to check this Japan and Korea inspired new cafe.

Finally managed to make my way to this cafe last weekend. In order to enjoy the 3D latte art, I checked their Facebook page for their latte art barista’s schedule and had to call them ahead of time to make my orders and reservations.

Brew Maison is located along Bukit Timah Road, opposite Singapore Chinese Girls School. Their location may not be considered very accessible to some since the easiest access will be by car/taxi followed by buses. For drivers, they do have parking facilities in the building but lots are limited.

The interior of the shop was well lit, with a clean modern look which was quite inviting.

After arrival, I confirmed my reservations and made my orders with the cashier. Spotted the latte art barista working on a Hello Kitty 3D latte art drink ~ nice!

Maybe because the cafe is still fairly new and going through the teething stage, the service was sort of under my expectations. Staff looked very flustered (even though the cafe was only about 25% filled), and even though I said to serve the waffles after my drinks were ready, they somehow did not register my request and decided to serve me my waffles before the drinks were ready. Hmm….

I ordered the Taro Latte with 3D Hello Kitty latte art ($4.20), Mocha ($4.50) and a waffle with ice-cream ($6.00).

The Taro Latte is great option for non-coffee drinkers. The drink does feels a little sweet towards the end, but overall the taste was decent and I could taste the taro. The kawaii Hello Kitty latte art was definitely icing on the cake, made the whole drinking experience so much more fun!

Mocha was of decent standard as commented by my hubby who was with me. Also glad to note that the prices for the drinks were quite affordable by cafe standards. The usual coffee drinks seem to come with nil (zero) latte arts, like this mocha that was served to us.

The waffle was a huge disappointment. The outsides were not at all crispy, it was sort of soft and limp when served. The vanilla ice cream was also nothing much to shout about. I will not be ordering this again the next round.

I will probably be coming back to this cafe again, only because the 3D latte art is way too cute. I do also like it that they have non-coffee options since I am not a coffee drinker, so the taro latte choice is good!

Important reminder : the 3D and 2D latte art drinks have to be pre-ordered via reservations. Check the schedule on their Facebook page and call them ahead to book.

Check Brew Maison’s facebook page (here) on the latte art artist’s timings and make a booking with them. Be very clear about your booking!

I had told them that I had 2 persons (me and plus 1) coming, one 3D latte art and the other 2D. They only got one of my reservations (thankfully the 3D latte art Hello Kitty) and missed out the other, so do be upfront and state clearly your orders.
