I have always wanted to make a Hello Kitty Hinamatsuri theme bento. In this bento, I have both Dear Daniel and Hello Kitty!

Why Hinamatsuri and what is Hinamatsuri, you might ask.

Hinamatsuri in Japn, translated as Doll’s Day or Doll’s Festival is celebrated on 3rd March. Families with daughters celebrate this special day to wish their daughters success and happiness in life.

Traditions include eating certain food such as chirasushi, enjoying sake and displaying ornamental dolls at home. The ornamental dolls will always depict the Obina (Emperor) or known as Odairi-sama and the Me-bina (Empress) or known as Ohina-sama.

The bento characters were made from mashed potatoes. Technique is as per what I shared in my Kawaii Bento cookbook.

I packed this Hello Kitty Hinamatsuri bento using my Magewappa Hina box from Bento&co.

The bento side dishes included sauteed tiger prawns, french beans with burdock and carrots, blanched broccoli and a cute ume flower nama-fu slice. Nama-fu is wheat gluten, an ingredients used commonly in Kyoto and shojin-ryori (vegetarian) Japanese cuisine.

The burdock and carrot strips are actually dehydrated vegetables from OKS Co. Ltd (株式会社オキス)based in Kagoshima. I am really happy that they are now bringing in already popular product in Japan to Singapore.

The products would be sold at Meidi-ya supermarket from later part of March onwards, and there will be a bento demo session this Saturday 7 Mar, at 3pm where I will show you how to make some cute bento!

Food sampling too! Hope to see you~~
