Hinamatsuri Bento (5) Miffy Hinamatsuri Bento! This is my first hinamatsuri theme bento of the year.

This is one lovely bento theme as hinamatsuri theme is pretty and also often reminds me of spring.

What is Hinamatsuri? Translated as Doll’s Festival or Doll’s Day, it is celebrated on 3 March in Japan. On this day, families with girls wish their daughters a happy and successful life. Chirashi-sushi is often eaten during this special day too.

I hope you like this Miffy Hinamatsuri Bento!

To match the Hinamatusri theme, I prepared chirashi-sushi (translated as scattered sushi), comprising of vinegared rice with colourful toppings.

The common chirashi-don in restaurants are served with sashimi toppings, but it is not a must to include raw fish in making chirashi-sushi. Since this not not consumed immediately as it is a bento, I omitted the raw fish.

The ingredients mixed into the vinegar rice included shiitake mushrooms, kanpyo, aburaage strips, sesame seeds and sakura denbu. The toppings were kinshi tamago, lotus root, sweet peas and carrots.

The Miffy characters are made to represent the Emperor and Empress ornamental dolls commonly displayed for the festival.

The Emperor known as Odairi-sama holds the ritual baton and the Empress known as Ohina-sama holds a fan.

The side dishes for today’s bento included baked chicken drumlets, mizuna vegetables, blanched sweet peas, cherry tomato, lotus root, tamagoyaki, fried-namafu (looks like a little firework, flower) and edamame skewered with bento pick.

The flora design on the tamagoyaki is made using my branding iron bought in Japan.

It took me a while to find a suitable box for today’s bento, but the clear acrylic bento box I bought from Primitive 陶舎花*花 was a lovely fit.
