More recipe testing for something exciting brewing! Here is Jackie Bear donuts~~

Trying out houjicha (Japanese roasted tea) flavour for the donuts this time.

Houjicha flavour was pretty strong but I think the donuts needed to be a little sweeter so as to bring out the tea flavours a little more.

Back to the kitchen table~~~

The recipe is quite similar to my earlier Totoro donuts that I shared in my blog. Except that this time I experimented with houjicha powder as well as using flour base mixture instead of hotcake mix in baking these bear donuts.

If you are keen to play around with cute doughnuts, do check out my earlier Totoro posting here and adjust for your recipe.

I will share this one once I made some final tweaks.

Baked Cute Doggy Donuts (1)Baked some doggy donuts today!

Woof~woof~~

haha some of the doggy donuts are a little burnt :P Looks like the doggy had a tan!

I do want to make character glazed donuts sometime soon but today lets eat a more healthy and less sweet option :)

They earned thumbs up from my colleagues and many have also asked me for the recipe :) looks like this is a keeper!

I just need to practice baking the donuts so that I can more cuter designs!

I found them a  little sweet for me so I have already reduced the sugar in the recipe below.

Also the pink cheeks were not so obvious after baked, might have to make the pink dough darker in colour.

I should have a game – find the Doggy Donut charm! haha yes, you might have noticed that tiny cute charm in the earlier photos and definitely in the photo above.

As part of a creative collaboration between me and my IG friend @oborochann, I made these doggy donuts inspired by her cute charm piece.

Oh yes, some of you might wish to cake the donut mold I used. Mine is KAI Cake Mate Silicon Donut Mold, you can now buy direct from Japan via Global Rakuten. I found a store link with the product here.


 

Recipe for Baked Doggy Donuts

(Makes 12 mini donuts)

Ingredients

  • 200g Morinaga hotcake mix
  • 100g milk
  • 200ml whipping cream
  • 1 egg (med size)
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp melted butter (unsalted)
  • 2 tbsp sugar

For the designs, prepare the following in 3 separate small bowls:

  • (A) 1 tsp milo powder + 1tsp cake flour
  • (B) 1 tsp black cocoa powder

*if you do not have the Japanese black cocoa powder, you can use valrhona dark cocoa powder

  • (C) 1 tsp cake flour + pink coloring

*I use pink icing colour in the recipe

Method

  1. In a large bowl, add in the hotcake mix, milk, whipping cream, egg, maple syrup, melted butter and sugar. Mix well.
  2. Scoop out 4 tsp of batter into (A), 2 tsp of batter into (B) and 2 tsp of batter into (C). Mix well.
  3. Transfer the batter from step 2 into small piping bags. I used baking paper to roll up my own mini piping bags. I find the ones made from baking paper easier to control the batter when I draw out the designs.
  4. If there are leftover melted butter, you can use it to lightly oil the donut mold. If not you can use a little salad oil or vegetable oil with kitchen paper napkin to do the same.
  5. Draw out the designs on the mold. (A) is used for the doggy’s ears, (B) is used for the eyes and nose and (C) is used for the cheeks.
  6. Bake at 180C for 1 min.
  7. Remove mold from oven, pour in the batter until about 90% full. Bake at 180C for 14-15mins.
  8. Wait till cool before removing donuts from the mold, if not the design might crack.
  9. Repeat steps 1-7 to bake the second batch.

Post update – improvement to my recipe, added some cream. It really made the baked donuts more moist!

After my earlier Rilakkuma baked donuts bento post, so many people have asked me for the recipe. 

So I made the baked donuts again this morning (so as to prepare the recipe photos) and packed them into my bento. 

The next time I make baked donuts again, I might experiment further, perhaps add butter or even try out a yogurt based recipe instead and see how that changes the texture or taste :)

I also tried out the new Hello Kitty chocolate silicon mold that I bought at Phoon Huat baking store to make the cute Hello Kitty chocolates to add to my baked donuts. 

Do you like them? 

I personally prefer the Rilakkuma chocolates that I made earlier. Haha, the Hello Kitty ones are very hard to take good photo as the glare from the white color is quite strong. haha :D Nonetheless, hope you like them! 

今日可愛いハローキティドーナツを作りました。楽しかったんです。ホットケーキミックスを使って、簡単なドーナツを作りました。レシピは下です。皆様、見てみてください。

その上、Phoon Huatで買った、キティちゃんのシリコンモールドを使用し、チョコレートを作りました。可愛いですね~

Since this was a breakfast bento, the side dishes were simple.

Aside from the baked donuts I made (matcha and chocolate flavours), I had half a matcha crocs (from St Marc cafe, bought the night before) in each bento, homemade matcha pudding with japanese red bean jelly and some strawberries! I love matcha!

これは朝弁だったので、おかずは簡単だったんです。 自家製お抹茶プリン、イチゴ、クロワッサンです。

嬉しいね~私は抹茶が大好きですから!

And if you have not seen my earlier Rilakkuma Baked Donuts bento, here it is!

Recipe for Baked Donuts using hotcake mix (matcha and chocolate flavours)

Makes about 12 mini donuts
(A)
150g hotcake mix
20ml maple syrup
60ml milk
40ml cream
(alternatively, you can replace milk and cream with 100ml of milk)
1 medium egg (56g)
(B)
1 tsp matcha powder
3/4 tbsp cocoa powder
 
Method
1) Mix ingredients (A) in a mixing bowl using a wooden spatula until evenly mixed
2) Divide the mixture roughly into 2 equal parts in two separate bowls. 
3) To one bowl, add the matcha powder. And the other bowl, add the cocoa powder. Mix well using a spoon or spatula until evenly mixed. 
4) Preheat the oven to 180C.
5) Using a pastry brush, brush on a thin layer of oil on the mold. Scoop in the mixture until 80% full. 
6) Bake for about 12 mins. 
7) Remove and set on the cooling rack. When cooled down, gently remove the baked donuts from the mold.

After a terrible headache last night, I wanted a nice comforting breakfast bento today. My favorite Morinaga hotcake mix to the rescue! So super easy and very fun, all you need is some silicon molds (or of course you can make pancakes too). 

I use the cute donut silicon mold that I bought in Japan and baked plain, chocolate and matcha flavour donuts! I simply divided the hotcake dough into three portions, and added in cocoa and matcha powder respectively to two. 
 
I also recently bought this super cute Rilakkuma Japanese dessert cookbook that came with a free silicon mold! So I made some Rilakkuma milk chocolates, decorated the features using chocolate pen. I paired them with my baked donuts. Ain’t they kawaii? 今日可愛いキャラベンの作るのは楽しみしました。ホットケーキミックスを使って、簡単なドーナツを作りました。!楽しかったんです。

日本で買った、シリコンモールドを使用し、プレーン、チョコレート、抹茶味のドーナツを焼きました。

その上、リラックマのシリコン型でリラックマチョコレートを作りました。可愛いね~
The side dishes are really easy, just some strawberries and grapes to go along. I also packed in chocolate sauce and honey in the bento. I also used the same mold and made a red bean jelly to accompany the fruits.

おかずは簡単です。イチゴ、ブドウ、あんこ水ようかんを添えっていますした。
