Titled – Smurfs: The Lost Village, this will be a fully animated, all-new take on the 3rd instalment of the Smurfs movie series. Watch the trailer now at

http://bit.ly/SmurfsMovieSGofficialtrailer on their FB page.

Super excited to see how the Smurfs face off against evil wizard Gargamel to save themselves, and the mysterious slew of creatures they befriend in the forbidden forest.
The movie is set to open in Singapore theatres on 6 April 2017 - which is like a one week’s time! I decided that it would be perfect timing to make this Smurf inspired bento lunchbox.

Featuring Papa Smurf, Hefty and Smurfette in this Smurfs: The Lost Village themed riceball bento.
FullSizeRender

For the Smurfs, I colored the rice using some blue pea flower extract, yellow natural food color and strawberry powder to achieve the blue, yellow and red colors. It’s quite a bit of work, but worth the effort to make this cute and healthy bento.

IMG_4066
At the side, I prepared a colorful side comprising of minced chicken, sliced okra, cherry tomatoes, carrots, tomberries and pink fish floss. I love the colors and also how easy this was. I simply cooked the chicken with some dashi, soy sauce, mirin, sake and yuzu pepper. Then topped it off with the sliced ingredients for the almost garden like design.
Hope you like this bento!

Frozen Tsum Tsum Bento (5) Frozen Tsum Tsum!

Another Tsum Tsum bento~ featuring the characters from frozen including Olaf, Anna and Elsa.

As mentioned in my earlier blog post, Tsum Tsum that started out as a LINE game gained international popularity. The game which is titled Disney Tsum Tsum,  translated as ‘Disney stack stack’,  involves connecting at least 3 of the same characters that causes them to ‘explode’, gaining points and coins in the process.

In the Tsum Tsum game, the Disnet characters all have a distinctive look. A much more kawaii plump version of their original selves. They also resemble plush little beanies.

In my earlier Tsum Tsum bentos, I have made e characters including Mickey, Pooh, Piglet, Perry, Donald, Stitch, Mike Wazowski, Chip N Dale.

So this time I decided to go with these cute characters from Disney animation, Frozen.

Hope you can recognise (front to  back) Anna, Elsa and Olaf the Snowman :)

I had fun making all these cute riceball sushi~ I had so much rice left from gathering. So decided to might as well pack a bento this morning.

The ingredients for the characters included:

Elsa the Snow Queen Tsum Tsum

  • rice mixed with a little ketchup (head)
  • white egg sheet (hair)
  • seaweed (eyes and eyebrows)

Anna Tsum Tsum

  • rice mixed with a little ketchup (head)
  • brown egg sheet (hair)
  • seaweed (eyes and eyebrows)

Olaf Tsum Tsum

  • rice (head)
  • white egg sheet (front teeth)
  • seaweed (eyes and eyebrows)
  • carrot slice (nose)

So as you can see, the ingredients are actually very simple. Not too complicated. I managed to make this bento with the side dishes in about an hour. And the sides included deep fried minced pork patties, mizuna and cherry tomatoes side salad, fruit salad.

Minions Deco Sushi (3)Minions Deco Sushi!

Stuart! Why are you in my lunch box? hahahahh

I even placed my guitar chopstick rest in the bento box, to match the theme. Everyone remembers Stuart and his guitar (just like Bob and his teddy Tim).

Minions Deco Sushi has been on my to-do list for the longest time. So glad I did it!

Minions fever over yet? I certainly hope not~ And hope you have fun checking out this cute Minions Deco Sushi creation.

It has been about 2 years since my certification with the Tokyo Sushi Academy for their Japan Sushi Instructor Association.

Since then, it has been a fulfilling journey, from learning how to make deco sushi rolls (known as kazarimakisushi in Japanese) to taking the instructor exams, creating my own original recipes like this one, and writing my own deco sushi cookbook (titled Kawaii Deco Sushi) that was published just less than 2 months back.

Thank you for the support always :)

For this Minions Deco Sushi, lets take a look at the sushi roll before cutting it up!

Divided the sushi roll into four equal pieces.

What is missing are the eyes and mouth which I added using some seaweed cut freehand.

Packed two of them into my bento box with some vegetables and pan seared salmon fillet.

While these two were passed to a friend of mine who is a Minion fanatic. haha. I hope she likes them.

If you are also keen on making deco sushi, remember to check out my cookbook okie!

Promise you that this cookbook covers all the basic techniques with visual illustrations for each of the recipe steps! It will be fun!

Now its time to eat Stuart :P haha

Minions Dinosaur Foodart (2)Minions and Dinosaur. hahaha

I am sure those of you who watched the Minions movie, would be familiar with this hilarious scene of the prehistoric minions accidentally causing the demise of their dino-boss.

Minions unlike another other type of creatures we know of, love their evil bosses to bits. But have survived since prehistoric days serving and accidentally killing their dino-boss, stone age man, king, general and Dracula before setting on their mission to find the next evil boss.

Super amusing to see how the minions who were in awe of their brutish dinosaur but their love for banana had ultimately caused their dino-leader falling into the hot lava :P

After the movie, I told myself that I have to find an opportunity to make these prehistoric minions together with their dinosaur leader.

And of course, unlike the ‘modern’ day minions, these prehistoric minions were dressed in leaves and greens. Even their headbands are green in colour.

So I made the 3 minions dressed in their prehistoric outfits too. The green parts are a mixture of lettuce and green egg sheet.

Their already ‘dead’ dinosaur boss is actually a thin slice of wholemeal wrap. And I had to make the hot lava too – the actual food is red curry prawns, cooked using Dancing Chef’s the red curry paste. Pretty fiery in flavour to.

The stone cliff edge is actually a small chunk of sourdough bread. A super fun Minions and Dinosaur foodart to make to start the week.

Happy Monday!!

Bob Minion Bento!

I think you guys might expect a couple of minions theme bento this 2 weeks. Totally thrilled and tickled by the minions movie that I watched over the weekend.

We are so lucky that the minions movie opened here in Singapore, even earlier than in US. Haven’t watched yet?

Then you got to check out their trailer (so funny!!!) via their Official website.

If you have watched the minions movie, you would then know of the 3 key minion characters in the movie, Stuart, Kevin and the cutest Bob.

Bob always carries his super cute bear plush toy along, aka like a ‘chou chou’ (local context).

The bear plush toy’s name is Tim.

Bob has a childlike personality that is so adorable!!!

Source: minionnation.tumblr.com

  • seaweed (goggles’ band)

Minions Bento (4)My hubby promised to take me to watch the latest Minions movie!

Excited~~ hahah

I was giggling and laughing through the movie trailers on YouTube, so so hilarious.

I just knew that I had to make a Minions Bento again. You can also see my past minion/evil minion theme food creations here

Featuring the 3 key protagonists in the latest Minions, Stuart (left), Kevin (center), and Bob (right).

Kevin the minion sets off on an adventure to meet the minions’ life purpose of serving for the most evil villain boss, and is joined by the ‘always hungry’ teenager Stuart and the timid and shy Bob.

HAHA, I really can’t wait to watch the movie.

I did not want to use too many eggs in this bento yet I wanted to colour the rice naturally. So instead of furikake, or egg yolks, I decided to cook scrambled eggs instead and I mixed the scrambled eggs with Japanese rice to create the yellow coloured riceballs for the minions.

To make it more realistic to the movie characters, I made the jumper suit out of egg sheet. Egg sheet is a cooked layer of egg which is thin and generally quite smooth.

Technique and illustrated method to make egg sheets/coloured egg sheets is covered in my Kawaii Bento cookbook under Techniques section.

Ingredients for minions (Kevin, Stuart, Bob)

  • Japanese rice +scrambled eggs (body, arms)
  • seaweed (eyes, hands, spec bands)
  • grey egg sheet (specs)
  • white egg sheet (eyes)
  • blue egg sheet (jumper)
  • rice + seaweed (shoes)
  • egg sheet (eye lids)

The side dishes for today’s Minions bento are sauteed french beans with mini shrimps, carrots, lettuce and buffalo drumlets.

I think this bento is perfect for Friday!

Just look at Bob’s face, he looks so happy with his arms in the air. heheh.

I was also amused at how I made Stuart hugging a crate of bananas~~ hahah

TGIF everyone.

Avengers BentoAvengers Captain America Bento!

Avengers is definitely one of the hottest trend lately as the movie screens in cinemas. Based on Marvel’s comics series, Avengers which comprises of a team of super heros and their journey to fight justice and protect the city.

In the successful movie series directed by Joss Whedon, some of the key super hero characters included Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor. Love the chemistry and comic factor in the movie amongst the characters and am so looking forward to watching Avengers: Age of Ultron this week!

But first up, Captain America Bento for you.Avengers Bento

Reason why I made this bento is partly because I have some leftover blue colored rice in the fridge which I cooked yesterday for Stitch Bento. So I wanted to use up the rice and Captain America it is.

I do hope that I will at least be able to make an Iron Man Bento in this week or latest next.  Earlier on I made a seaweed cutting bento of The Hulk and Thor. See post here.Avengers Bento

As mentioned in my blog post yesterday, the blue was coloured mainly from blue pea flower extract (troublesome – thats why I rarely work with blue haha).

Captain America:

  • Head (rice mixed with some teriyaki sauce)
  • Hair (egg sheet)
  • Eyes, mouth (seaweed)
  • Shield, Body, Arm (blue rice, crabstick)Avengers Bento

The side dishes included some sauteed vegetables of mushroom, baby corn and french beans, carrots which I cut using cutters and skewer them with bento pick, lettuce, steamed corn and buffalo drumlets.

Avengers BentoAvengers Bento!! Featuring the Hulk and Thor!!

It has been a while since I last made seaweed cutting art.

This time its for this Avengers Bento.

Iess than a week, Avengers II movie will be opening in cinemas. I am sort of a fan girl when it comes to hero and sci-fi type of shows; I am so looking forward to watching Avengers II!

In actual fact, I had sketched out all four main characters from Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor. I took reference from some fan art online for the drawings.

But my bento will have to be super huge to fit all four of them. So I decided to make just the Hulk and Thor.

I loved the chemistry and comic factor between the two of them in the Avengers movie! Don’t you? I still remember the part where the Hulk punched Thor :P

As I am not feeling too good and am still on meds for my cold, I figured that seaweed bento would be perfect as I can cut the seaweed the night before.

This morning, all I needed to do was to prepare the side dishes and pack my Avengers Bento. So I managed to get more zzz

Seaweed cutting method has been shared on several occassions on my blog, please look at an earlier tutorial here.

To add the colours, I used food coloring and lightly painted on the oblate sheet.

Yes, all is edible! :)

The side dishes included sauteed prawns with french beans and mushrooms, sweet peas and tamagoyaki. The star print is made using my branding iron which I bought in Japan.

Today’s Avengers Bento was packed in my Noda Horo white rectangular bento box that I got in Japan. I love the enamelware make and size, perfect for lunchbox. This box is now available at Tokyu Hands for around $20.

Have a good Tuesday!

Love is in the air~~ Baymax Bento!

Here is a super cute Baymax bento, Baymax is giving Hiro-san a big big bear hug!

Do you want a hug too?

So I decided to make this Valentine’s Day Baymax bento in celebration of unconditional love.

I know many of you have been asking me to teach a Valentine’s Day Bento workshop but it has been really busy lately leading up to CNY. But don’t worry, I have two surprises for you!

This Valentine’s Day Baymax bento tutorial as well as a festive giveaway by Scotch™ for 3 lucky winners!!

I love Baymax! Do you too??

Today’s Baymax bento design was inspired by the Japanese movie poster of Big Hero 6 that depicts Baymax hugging Hiro-san in his arms.

I received a very special gift from 3M Scotch™ recently to welcome the festive season – their latest cutters: Scotch™ Titanium Kitchen Scissors and the Scotch™  Portable Food Scissors.

Together with the gift set, came a recipe to prepare a festive foodart for Lunar New Year as well as the required food ingredients.

I did a little spin on this and created my own creation.

A Valentine’s Day Baymax bento  using my new Scotch™ Titanium Kitchen Scissors ;)

Bento Tutorial – Baymax Bento

Recipe steps

1. Sketch the design of Hiro-san on baking sheet. Cut the parts using  Scotch™ Titanium Kitchen Scissors.

2. Cut a slit on the crabstick and remove the white parts, leaving just the red layer. Soak a small square of kombu seaweed.

3. Place the baking sheet cut outs on the different food ingredients. Follow the outlines and cut using  Scotch™ Titanium Kitchen Scissors. Over here I used chicken ham for the head/skin part, kombu seaweed for the hair and red crabstick for the clothes.

4. Place some cooked Japanese rice on heat resistant cling wrap. Tighten and shape into a compact round ovalish rice ball. This is for Baymax’s head.

5. Similarly, shape a triangle for Baymax’s body.

7. Lay the ham, crabstick and kombu parts on the triangular rice-ball and then arrange rice at both sides and shape into the arms of Baymax.

8. Prepare your bento box, line with some wax paper.

9. Transfer the rice-ball and the parts into the bento box.

10. Cover with cling wrap gently and prepare your side dishes. I used the side dish recipe in the kit provided by  Scotch™ to make festive tangerine peel chicken.

11. For easy preparation and packing into the bento box, I cut the chicken thigh meat into smaller cubes before cooking.

12. To make the ham flower, I fold the slice ham into half gently and cut small slits along the side.

13. Roll it up tightly and voila – ham flower is done!

14. Some of the remaining items include making cut outs using the pink kamaboko.

15. I detached the  Scotch™ Titanium Kitchen Scissors  and the single blade actually acts as a knife.

16. I cut the pink layer of the kamaboko and used the heart shape cutter to make the shapes. You can also use other cutters as preferred.

17. Need to slice the cherry tomatoes? Similarly, I used the Scotch™ Titanium Kitchen Scissors to do the job.

18. After all these is done, I simply packed the sides into the bento box.

19. Lastly is to complete the characters and their features. Using some seaweed, I cut the circles and line for Baymax. Using edible pen, I draw on the features for Hiro-san.

And this kawaii Baymax Valentine’s Day Bento is done!!

Baymax French Toast Bento (2)I made Baymax French Toast Bento today! My second Baymax Bento :)

See my earlier Baymax Bento (rice-based) here.

With a lunch appointment in place, I needed something for breakfast. Decided to give myself a treat and made from French Toast. I really love French Toast, plus it is awesome since I have some lovely berries and pomegranate seeds too.

Recently Fairprice Finest have been started to sell pomegranate seeds, really sweet and fresh. The seeds come in a sealed pack without the outer fruit layer. Perfect to toss them into your yogurt, ice cream or salads, etc.

Do you know Baymax?  Baymax is the superhero in Walt Disney recent animation film, Big Hero 6. He is an inflatable robot built by Tadashi to be a healthcare companion, so cute!

Since I had some quail eggs left, I boiled them and used them to make Baymax character in this French toast bento.

The eyes/mouth of Baymax was simply drawn on using edible markers. I was trying to make a quick bento.

The downside is that edible pen ten to sort of change color depending on the food items. For instance, you can see that there is a greenish tint here.

I used some French baguette to make the French toast. They give a nice sturdy, less soggy but chewy French toast.

At the side, I packed fruits including strawberries, blackberries and pomegranate seeds. I also packed a jar of maple syrup to eat with my French toast.

Today’s bento was packed in my white monbento, and I also added some heart shape bento picks.

The monbento box is available at Bento&co.
